Everything You Need to Know About Barre Classes in Amsterdam

Your How-To Guide For Getting To Your First Barre Class.

So you’ve heard of Barre but don’t quite know what it is, if it’s for you or even if it’s pronounced ‘bar’ or ‘barr-ay’? No stress, 28 Days of Barre will sort you out. Buckle up, this one is going to be a lot of fun.

Barre (pronounced bar) is a fitness trend based on ballet exercises. It uses the ballet barre, plus small props like bands and balls and focuses on small isometric movements. Classes are usually done to fun music (around 120BPM), and the focus is on toning and lengthening muscles.

We have two guest bloggers doing the classes and blogging for this challenge, and… that’s all I’ll say for now, other than they are probably very different from what you might be expecting!

In the meantime, check out below where you can take a barre class in Amsterdam; read a brief description of the studios and the type of classes they offer; and if you are keen to give it a go, you can check out my tips for attending your first ever barre class (tips are not specific to Amsterdam)

Studio Descriptions

Barre Concept Nederlands

These guys were the first to bring the true Barre workout to Amsterdam. Classes are run all over the city at different studios. Teachers are really friendly, their on-boarding process is nice (they do weekly intro lessons for complete newbies). You feel the workout, but classes never get too challenging.

Good for: beginners to intermediate

Zhembrovskyy Ballet & Dans School

Alexander Zhembrovskyy is a recently retired professional ballet dancer from the Dutch National Ballet. His school teaches many types of ballet and dance classes and they offer ‘Ballet Fitness’ classes 12 times per week. Ballet Fitness isn’t technically Barre (think bigger functional movements based on ballet exercises rather than small isometric movements), but I have included it in this list because if your goal is to get in shape (improve general fitness, increase flexibility, tone up, lose weight) then this could be the place for you, and from my experience it is the closest class in Amsterdam to match the intensity of barre classes that are offered in other countries. You do need to have some sort of body awareness and know your own limits because the pace moves quickly and there isn’t always time for full explanations.

Good for: anyone looking for a challenge or wanting to get in shape

Studio 191

Studio 191 is a sexy little yoga / barre / movement studio in De Pijp. The schedule is constantly being updated with the latest fun fitness trends – think surf yoga, barre box, aroma yoga. Staff are really friendly, studio is beautiful, props (small balls and stretchy bands) and barre classes are on offer everyday.

Good for: Anyone who lives in De Pijp, all levels, fun, positive, social vibes.

Shape All In

This is one of the few gyms in Amsterdam that are offering Barre classes. They are taken by a warm, but sensationally eccentric teacher called Marianne. Classes are fun, focus is on small isometric movements.

Good for: Shape All in Members, peeps in the West, putting you in a good mood

Move // West

I hesitated putting these guys on this list because their Barre classes are half Essentrics and half barre. The best way I can describe Essentrics is a slightly more physically strenuous version of Tai chi, but choreographed to chic music. The barre part of class does what they promise – you will feel it but you usually move to the next exercise before you are getting anywhere near feeling any sort of burn or muscle fatigue. Friendly staff, great for people who want to move but not workout.

Good for: rehabilitation, to get your blood flowing, good if you already have a strenuous exercise regime and want to just move and stretch a little bit.

Are the new kids on the block specialising in intense pilates (reformer) and Barre classes. Their website promises to be the best barre classes in town so I’m keen to check them out. I haven’t had a chance to join a barre class with them yet – if you have – I’d love to hear what your experience was like!

Good for: Those who want to feel the burn, and concentrate on barre / pilates classes.

Karen Clark Body And Mind

Ex-professional dancers offer daily Dynamic Flow classes as well as two Dynamic Flow / Barre Workouts.

Good for: Movement, flow, mind body connection

Studios and Gyms Offering a Couple of Classes each week

Tips For Attending Your First Barre Class

  • Wear normal active wear (tights, tank top). And if you haven’t seen this little video about active wear, I recommend checking it out :-)
  • Get some grippy socks. You can use normal socks to start with if you don’t have grippy ones, but the grip helps you to stay upright.(always a good thing!) Current favs.
  • Take a water bottle, any will do of course but if you want a sexy one that supports a great cause, check out Dopper.
  • Get there at least 5-10 minutes early – life is stressful enough without having to make your cycle across town a race against the clock
  • Bring a mate :-) Barre is meant to be fun – it’s nice to be able to laugh at yourself in weird positions and how much your hamstrings are burning so having a friend there with you makes it even more fun and social.
  • If you have no dance experience, or consider yourself pretty unfit, un-coordinated or inflexible, start with classes that offer a beginner / intro class
  • And bring a good attitude, like anything that you are new to there will be a learning curve so be kind to yourself and know that you will get better at it if you give it a decent go.

Prep At Home First

If you’d like to try some barre exercises at home before launching into a class, you can check out this series of great little videos from Barre Body in Australia (paid membership). The exercises are really well explained, and it gives you an idea of when to expect when you are in a barre class.

Or, for a free alternative check out this free one.

Have you been to a barre class recently for the first time? I would love to hear in the comments below – what you thought of it and if you have any tips for newbies.
