How To Un-Diet

When we think about diets we often associate them with restrictions, limitations, and exclusions—we make things small. We usually attach a goal to it—like losing 5 kgs by a certain date—but we don’t plan for what happens after that. We overlook the bigger picture: the mindset and lifestyle changes that are necessary to help us feel confident in our bodies long-term.

🧠 Dieting doesn’t work because it focuses on short-term goals and doesn’t address the underlying habits, mindset, and sustainable shifts needed for real, lasting change. Once the goal is achieved, most people revert to old patterns, leading to the dreaded yo-yo effect.

💫 Research shows that one of the key factors in making any habit stick is enjoyment. You can only rely on discipline for so long before it becomes exhausting. If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, it’s almost impossible to maintain. That’s why it’s so important to fuel your body with nutrients that make you feel good, to find an eating pattern that works for your lifestyle, and to educate yourself on the basics of nutrition. That way, you can build a plan that nourishes your body, boosts your energy, is sustainable long-term, and actually brings you joy.

I call this the un-diet—nourish over restriction, fuel your body rather than focusing on limiting calories, and focus on what you’re adding to your life, not what you’re taking away.

Here are a few ways to get started:

1. Focus on nourishment: Emphasise eating whole, nutrient-dense foods that make you feel good. Think “what do I need in this meal to fuel my body”, rather than “how can I make it lower in calories”.

2. Understand your protein requirements: Getting adequate protein is essential for our overall health. I often start here when working with clients – without adequate protein, it is very difficult to find the energy and drive to kickstart your health journey.

3. Prioritise consistency over perfection: It’s not about being 100% “on” all the time—small steps done consistently lead to long-term results.
